Water Management

The 2003 Campus Comprehensive Plan's Water Management and Sustainability section (see p. 144) lays out specific guidelines regarding water conservation practices the University should adhere to. This provides an overall direction for sustainable water use on campus.

Campus water issues include topics such as managing potable water sources, use of water for heating and cooling, use of reclaimed water for landscape irrigation, and managing the quantity and quality of rain water flows. In addition to efficiencies realized in mechanical systems and equipment upgrades, one focus of sustainability and water on campus is rain water harvesting. Rain water harvesting is accomplished via ongoing collaboration between faculty, students, and staff as a part of the University's Surface Water Working Group (SWWG). A number of these projects are detailed in the sections below. A course is now available on water harvesting at the UA.
