Plant an Idea... the Earth Day Celebration and Sustainability Fair!

The University of Arizona Campus Sustainability Committee, in conjunction with Residence Life, the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, and the UA Farmers' Market are pleased to announce the 2008 Earth Day Celebration and Sustainability Fair, to be held on the west end of the UA Mall on Wednesday April 16th.

Spend the day learning more ways to be environmentally responsible. The festivities will begin on the Mall at 10 am. All your favorite Farmers' Market vendors will be there, in addition to informative and commercial displays from local retailers, innovative entrepreneurs, local government, UA departments, and student groups.

Several special attractions will also be sharing space on the Mall. ASRA, the student recycling association, has partnered with IKEA to bring to the Earth Day Celebration a giant, fully furnished Sustainability Maze, providing practical knowledge and tips on creating a more sustainable lifestyle in your dorm or home.

Biking to campus is one way to live a more sustainable life. UA Parking and Transportation Services and the UA Cycling Club are hosting a Bike 2 Campus Event in conjunction with the Earth Day Celebration. There will be free bicycle tune-ups and registration on the Mall, as well as safety information, and bike demonstrations by TREK.

Also on the Mall, the Campus Sustainability Committee will conduct the first-ever University of Arizona tap-water challenge. Test your taste buds and your water knowledge as Tucson tap water and a variety of bottled waters go head-to-head. The event includes free prize giveaways and aims to raise awareness of sustainability issues related to this undervalued resource.

Event participants will also be encouraged to make an Earth Day responsibility pledge. Residence Life and CSIL will be hosting a booth where students, faculty and anyone else who cares about the environment can make their mark on the twenty-foot pledge wall. Be there between 10 and 2 to make a pledge, leave a smaller footprint, and encourage others to do the same.

University of Arizona KAMP Student Radio will be broadcasting live from the Mall stage from noon to 1 pm, followed by student and faculty presentations on the importance of Earth Day and sustainability goals from 1 to 2 pm.

The Earth Day Celebration and Sustainability Fair will conclude at 4 pm with an interactive "Chill Out" climate change webcast at the Park Student Union.

University of Arizona Earth Day events are free of charge and open to the public.
